Believing Loyalty
“Believing Loyalty” is a term describing how biblical faith actually works—not mere mental assent, but trust expressed through allegiance and action. This phrase captures the Hebrew and Second Temple Jewish worldview far better than the modern English word belief.
How Biblical Faith Actually Works:
- It’s not just mental assent
- It IS trust expressed through allegiance and action
“The righteous shall live by his faithfulness (ʾemunāh).” (Habakkuk 2:4 The root word is אָמַן (ʾāman) — “to be firm, reliable, trustworthy”. The word carries relational loyalty, not abstract belief. It is used for covenant fidelity in the Hebrew (Old Testament). This is not “believing the right doctrine,” but remaining loyal to YHWH amid chaos.
The Greek (New Testament) uses the word πίστις pistis. Modern translations interpret this as faith. The ancient meaning is “trust, allegiance, loyalty”.
In Greco-Roman and Jewish contexts, pistis commonly described:
- Loyalty to a king
- Fidelity in a treaty
- Allegiance within a household
It does. NOT mean “I believe something to be true,” but “I commit myself to someone.”
In the Ancient Near East, the cultural understanding of covenant was NOT equal to contract. Instead, a covenant demanded:
- Exclusive loyalty
- Obedience
- Public allegiance
But here’s the difference in their understanding and thinking:
- Idolatry is treason
- Faithlessness is adultery
- Repentance is returning loyalty
Deuteronomy 7:9 - “Yahweh keeps covenant with those who love Him and keep His commandments.”
- Love equals loyalty
- Faith equals loyalty
- Obedience equals loyalty
They are not separate categories!
The New Testament didn’t reinvent FAITH but reframed it. Consider Paul, in Romans 3:22 — “The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ…”
Grammatically, this phrase can mean:
- Faith in Christ
- The faithfulness of Christ
Second Temple Jews would hear both:
- Jesus’ faithful obedience
- Our allegiant trust in Him
In Romans 1:5 — “The obedience of faith…”, Paul does not oppose faith and obedience. Rather, he assumes faith=loyal obedience.
James 2:22 — “Faith was completed by works.” Works don’t add to faith; they reveal what kind of faith it is.
Important points to keep in mind:
- Humans are called to exclusive allegiance to YHWH
- Entertaining competing loyalties = spiritual rebellion
- Faith is who you side with, not just what you think
Jesus called us to Follow Him, not agree with him intellectually.
- Salvation language is kingdom language
- Jesus is called LORD
- Baptism is a public allegiance marker
- Apostasy is described as falling away, not “losing a thought.”
