Going Without Knowing
Hebrews 11:8
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out… And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Abraham is told to leave everything.
His land.
His family structure.
His security.
And go… somewhere.
God does not give him a map.
He gives him a promise.
So Abraham goes—not because he understands, but because he trusts.
This is the beginning of a lifelong journey marked by tension:
- promised land… but living as a foreigner
- promised descendants… but years of barrenness
- promised blessing… but constant uncertainty
Abraham spends his life walking toward something he never fully receives.
Hebrews tells us why:
He was looking for a city with foundations—something beyond what he could see.
His faith was not anchored in geography. It was anchored in God’s future.
This is where faith becomes deeply uncomfortable for us. We want clarity. We want timelines. We want visible progress.
Abraham gets none of that.
He gets a call… and a promise… and a lifetime of movement.
And still—he is called faithful.
Because faith is not about having all the details.
It is about trusting the One who calls you forward.
Reflection:
What has God asked you to step into without giving you the full picture?
Prayer:
Lord, Abraham's testimony spoke to me and encouraged me to learn from him—trusting You with details and simply obeying You. Call me. Lead me. And I will obey by trusting You without having clear answers beforehand. You, oh Lord, are faithful and trustworthy. Thank You for Abraham's witness, in Jesus' name. Amen!
