Clinging Through the Struggle
Hebrews 11:21
“By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff.”
Jacob’s life is marked by struggle.
He deceives.
He strives.
He manipulates.
And then one night, everything comes to a head.
He wrestles with a mysterious figure until daybreak—a confrontation that leaves him permanently changed. His hip is dislocated. His name is changed. And he walks away with a limp.
Blessed—but wounded.
By the time we reach the moment Hebrews highlights, Jacob is at the end of his life. Leaning on his staff, he blesses the next generation and bows in worship.
It’s a quiet scene—but it carries the weight of a lifetime.
The man who once grasped for blessing now rests in it.
The man who once relied on his own cunning now leans—literally and spiritually—on God.
Faith, for Jacob, was not neat or polished.
It was messy.
Relational.
Hard-won.
And in the end, it is expressed not in strength—but in dependence.
He worships while leaning.
That may be one of the most honest pictures of faith in all of Scripture.
Reflection:
Where has your struggle with God actually been forming your faith rather than weakening it?
Prayer:
Lord, as much as Jacob messed up in his younger years, faith was being formed, strengthened, activated. Thank You for the assurance that You have made a way for us through faith that grows even through our messy lives. All glory and honor and praise belongs to You, our Lord and King. In Jesus' name, amen.
