Connected to the Source

The Spirit at work flows outward through those who believe in Jesus, to those who are connected to the Source.
Connected to the Source

There's something about fountains that causes us to pause for a moment or two. Movement with purpose, a steady lifting and releasing, as though the earth itself were breathing.

I look at a fountain and see an illustration of renewal — an upward reach followed by graceful return — a continual reminder that what is sourced deeply can rise beautifully and never truly run dry. What a beautiful example of the grace and mercy of God!

In the ancient world, fountains were not decorative luxuries — they were life itself. In the arid Near East, a spring meant survival, covenant blessing, and divine presence. That makes the biblical imagery incredibly rich.

John Walton, an American biblical scholar and author known for his work on the Old Testament, noted that in the ancient world, water access defined civilization. Spiritually speaking, YHWH was and is civilization’s true source.

We often want stored blessings. But God is not a reservoir; He is a Spring! He offers Himself ... ongoing, flowing life.

Although a broken cistern may look impressive at first glance, careers, relationships, and religious performance will crack under seasons of dryness.

"Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:38)

Living water! Flowing water! Cleansing water!

The Spirit at work flows outward through those who believe in Jesus. Stagnant water breeds death, so as we are given, we must give to others. The springs of life within us must continue flowing, not just to cleanse us only, but to pour out on others as well.

We were not designed to live off stored or stagnant water. Instead, we were designed to live connected to the Source. Broken cisterns demand constant repair so the fountain never runs dry. The question is not whether we are thirsty. The question is, where are we digging?

Prayer

Father, help me remember that I am designed to live connected to the Source ... connected to YOU. Let Your living water, flowing water, cleansing water flow in me and through me; may it never run dry! Amen!
