Firm Foundation: Part 1

“Yeah! I believe in God!” But, what does that mean? What is “belief” in God? Do we really understand what we mean when we confess that we “believe” in God?

I Believe In God...

Stop right there! What does it mean to “believe in God”?  We frequently hear that phrase when we ask folks if they’re saved. The typical response is, “Yeah! I believe in God!” But, what does that mean? What is “belief” in God? Do we really understand what we mean when we confess that we “believe” in God?

Belief is a word to describe our confidence in something or someone. It’s a way of accepting that a statement is true as opposed to speculation or assumption, theory or hypothesis, guess or hope. By stating, “I believe…” we are declaring that we take the object or subject of our belief to be reliable and free from doubt. In other words, we need to KNOW the subject of our belief. After all, how can we put our trust and confidence in God who we only know superficially?

Sadly, this is the case with many who say they believe in God. “I believe” essentially means I know and have found the object of my belief to be true and credible and worth my trust and belief. So, before we go any further, ask yourself if you really believe in God, if you have personally found him to be true and credible and worthy of your trust and belief.

If you have doubts, take the time to let God know you are unsure and ask Him to help you settle your belief once and for all.

"Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)
