MY GOD, I AM THINE

It is a blessing we dare not take for granted to know that we belong to Him. With all our failures. With all our frailty. With all our mis-steps. In our falling down. In our tripping up. In the throes of lack and want. In the midst of pain and weakness. We are His.

What a Comfort Divine!

"My God, I am thine—what a comfort divine!
What a blessing to know that the Saviour is mine!
In the heavenly Lamb thrice happy I am,
And my heart it doth dance at the sound of his name."

Just to know. What joy! What blessing! What peace! What comfort! What an amazing gift!

If we are honest with ourselves, we will confess that there have been times we didn’t have such peace or assurance. We’ve questioned our position in Christ — most likely in the midst of severe trials or hardships. Yet it is WE who fail to trust, not God who fails to be all He covenants to be. If there are moments you have experienced doubt, please know the thought has never been entertained by the Father. He is in covenant with us through Jesus Christ. Yes and Amen. Never-ending. No shadow of turning. His hand remains outstretched to us even when doubt clouds our eyes and obscures our vision of His glory at work within.

Dear friends, it is a blessing we dare not take for granted to know that we belong to Him. With all our failures. With all our frailty. With all our mis-steps. In our falling down. In our tripping up. In the throes of lack and want. In the midst of pain and weakness. We are His. Our imprint deeply engraven on the palm of His hand. He cannot. He will not. It is impossible for Him to forget us. We are His.

“My God, I am thine — what a comfort divine!” Yes, indeed. The greatest comfort known to mankind can only be found while being in Christ, for (as Spurgeon wrote), “For all that Christ did is thine. That perfect righteousness which Jesus wrought out, when through his stainless life he kept the law and made it honourable, is thine, and is imputed to thee."

Once again the words to a hymn from my youth ring in my heart as I write:

Not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul;
Not what my toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole.
Not what I feel or do can give me peace with God;
Not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load.

Your voice alone, O Lord, can speak to me of grace;
Your power alone, O Son of God, can all my sin erase.
No other work but Yours, no other blood will do;
No strength but that which is divine can bear me safely through.

Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin;
Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within.
Thy love to me, O God, not mine, O Lord, to Thee,
Can rid me of this dark unrest, And set my spirit free.

I bless the Christ of God; I rest on love divine;
And with unfaltering lip and heart I call this Savior mine.
His cross dispels each doubt; I bury in His tomb
Each thought of unbelief and fear, each lingering shade of gloom.

I praise the God of grace; I trust His truth and might;
He calls me His, I call Him mine, My God, my joy and light.
’Tis He Who saveth me, and freely pardon gives;
I love because He loveth me, I live because He lives.

Yes, “He calls me His, I call Him mine, My God, my joy and light.” Do you belong to Him? Can you call Him yours? If you’re not sure, now is the time to settle the question once and for all. It’s time to rest on His divine love, to dispel each doubt or lingering shade of gloom. Trust His truth and might … there is no other who can bring true joy regardless the circumstances of life.

O believer … knowest thou not that the love which the Father set on a perfect Christ, he sets on thee now? For all that Christ did is thine” (Spurgeon).
