He's Amazing
“What’s one more?” my husband said
“We’ll make some room for Jim!”
I knew, too, that he was right;
We’d find a place for him.
Painful bruises on his heart
Made loving us so hard;
Painful mem’ries from his past
Left Jimmy hurt and scarred.
Keeping friends or pals was hard
“You’re stupid!” kids would say.
Loving him was not enough
He tried to run away.
Jimmy thought if he was bad
He’d prove our love untrue.
What he didn’t know was that
God’s plan would not fall through!
Dad by day we prayed for God
To mend his broken heart;
Loving, holding, staying close
We tried to do our part.
Jimmy brought a note from school
One unsuspecting day.
Hope was shining in his eyes...
Was healing on its way?
“I would like to have your son
Join our Cross Country team.
He’s amazing on the track!
His speed and form—extreme!”
Coach loved Jimmy, we could tell
And Jimmy loved him back.
All at once he found success
And healing on a track.
That first season birthed a star
Through the entire state.
Jimmy won first place each time;
His coach said, “He is great!”
Affirmations from the Coach
And accolades of fans
Worked to heal a young man’s heart
Like tools in God’s hands.
Looking back now through the years
Jim knows, there is no doubt...
He was rescued by the Coach
True love through him flowed out.
Unsung heroes’ memories
Through years will fade away.
But evidence still lingers
Through lives they’ve touched each day.

Note from the author: This is a true account of our oldest son’s life—destined for failure and defeat, rejected by his natural family and potential adoptive families. He came to us at age 15, a broken and wounded young man. The assistant principal at his high school watched him run one day and sent home a letter—he was the Cross Country Coach who touched our son’s heart like no one else could. That once broken young man has now been married for nearly twenty-five years to a wonderful young woman, and together they have four children. Needless to say, this family will never forget Mr. Plummer … our unsung hero!
